Volleywaltz was an opportunity to give almost everyone in the soundtrack orchestra palette a tiny solo — in under two minutes, I gave some melodic fragments to the accordion, the trombone, the French horn, the theremin, and several instruments that had been sitting in the background of the score. I aspired to write a melody reminiscent of David Raksin’s theme to ‘Laura’, starting off in a far-off key and finding its way home. Though the melody has a ‘soaring’ shape, harmonically it’s always imploding, falling, and unstable. This theme appears very sparsely in the film — I hope you will catch it!
